The Layers of your Child

I press the shutter button down.

I got it. I got a winning shot of that child. This will definitely make the gallery.”

This is not pride motivating this endeavor as I rarely submit photos into competitions for awards.

It’s a winning shot because I really SAW the child, I unconditionally accepted them and found that little expression on their face that shows what they were really thinking. It shows their personality in a unique way. I captured who they really are in one still photograph.

It goes in the gallery because then they get to see it on a screen and then we can print it and then it goes into their hands!

When they see that photo, they can feel celebrated, loved and seen.

They will love it more and more as they age too. As they graduate from high school and need it for the yearbook. As they pull the picture out to show their partner while going through old memories. As they do their inner child work and see that photo again. Able to look themselves in the eye and give their body a big ‘ole self hug. Telling their younger self that they were enough. That they were loved. That they had beautiful childhood moments and memories. That they can lean on those beautiful, sunny days as they process the harder, cloudy ones.

I want them to feel like a million bucks. I want to give them all my attention as they share about their favorite toy and ask me to take pictures of their new trick on the couch until they get it right.

I want to look them in the eye and see the galaxy of their iris and the universe of thoughts behind it. I want to love every hair out of place and every stain on their shirt. I want to see them as you, their parent, sees them and then work hard to capture that.

I promise I will see the layers of your child.
